Once upon a time, two design firms were working toward a better future, not yet realizing their greatest impact would come from working together...

The story of The Moment and Hostile Sheep is a kind of love story...from humble beginnings, to lingering long glances at a distance, to love at first collaboration.

In 2024 we finally put a ring on it.

But what brought us together was a shared love and passion for design, change and a shared purpose to make the world better.

This is our story...

In 2011, The Moment emerges from Toronto’s design community after co-founders Dan, Greg, and Mark attend the Authentic Leadership in Action Summer Institute. Inspired by global changemakers, they set out to popularize design and participatory methods for driving change.

2011 - 2012

In 2012, Jordan founds Hostile Sheep to help people by designing better products. Inspired by hands-on learning in the trades, the company delivers value faster than anyone through the use of apprentices who learned through doing.

2012-2017, The Moment evolves from a small team of design thinking facilitators into an innovation studio specializing in design research and service design. It defines the role of Innovation Designer to reflect its multidisciplinary approach to designing innovation and change.

2013-2016, Hostile Sheep builds a six-person team focused on productizing emerging technology and uncovering market needs. At the same time, it pursues learning from industry leaders, gaining deep insights from those with game-changing ideas, methods, and models.

2017-2020, The Moment begins its Teal journey, scaling through self-management over hierarchy. In 2020, it launches an Employee Share Ownership Program to foster entrepreneurship, equity, and succession, while partnering with Hostile Sheep to integrate rapid digital prototyping.

2017-2020, Hostile Sheep shifts to a purpose-driven business model after losing its founding client. Business becomes more meaningful and it starts measuring success by numbers of people it helps; real people impacted by the improvements brought to the market.

2021-2023, The Moment expands its Associates network and deepens its partnership with Hostile Sheep, recognizing digital product design as key to helping clients bring the future to life. Together, they created some of their most meaningful work—now front and centre in The Moment’s portfolio.

2021-2023, Hostile Sheep builds a true friendship with The Moment, enabling both to deliver more impact in a richer, more meaningful way. The challenge of integrating service design with product design was both invigorating and deeply motivating.

2024, The Moment and Hostile Sheep begin a strategic merger, blending their strengths to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Alongside new offerings and a renewed value proposition, The Moment transforms its operations to support growth and impact.

In 2024, Hostile Sheep merges with The Moment. It quickly recognizes deep, meaningful similarities; purpose, values, beliefs, processes, and people were aligned. It feels both familiar and exciting; the possibilities of what they could achieve together are breathtaking.

2024-Present – The Moment is evolving how it creates change for clients, exploring systemic impact through experimentation and iteration. It is defining a methodology that integrates service, product, and system design with change leadership to drive meaningful, connected outcomes.
